Musing from the owner of Grow and Make: Will Johnston
So excited to see this story. If you have been to Costa Rica you can understand why they made this smart decision to preserve the incredible resources of their beautiful country.
♸ Costa Rica bans styrofoam containers
Styrofoam is one of the most expensive plastics to recycle, and a single piece can take up to a million years to completely break up once discarded. According to Global Citizen, “plastic is a major environmental pollutant in Costa Rica which accounts for only 0.03% of the earth’s surface but contains 6% of the world’s biodiversity. Last month, Costa Rica passed a law (which goes into effect in two years) forbidding the use of styrofoam anywhere in the country. Violators can be fined up to $7,600.
It’s time for the rest of us to do the same (plastic utensils and straws too).
