I watched an excellent interview tonight with the authors of a new book entitled 'The Gardens of Democracy. This book is written by a venture capitalist (Nick Hanauer) and government policy advisor (Eric Liu) who write about the imbalances in our country as a by-product of wealth inequality. In the interview and the book they suggest that this disparity is eroding the core of our country.

It's so ironic that the Republicans have convinced the middle class that it's in their best interest not to raise taxes on the wealthy uber-rich in our country. We must understand the costs of the aggregation of wealth that has taken place in the last twenty years to the top one percent. Without reasonable redistribution the middle class is eroded while the poor are disenfranchised.

Terry Gross interviews Edward Humes regarding his book Garbagology. Americans generate more trash than anyone else on the planet: more than 7 pounds per person each day. About 69 percent of that trash goes immediately into landfills. And most landfill trash is made up of containers and packaging — almost all of which should be recycled, says Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Edward Humes, "It's instant trash," he says. "We pay for this stuff, and it goes right into the waste bin, and we're not capturing it the way our recycling programs are intending us to capture it. We're just sticking it in the ground and building mountains out of it."
