How We Rate

Our mission is to make sustainability a more practical and accessible process for individuals, families and businesses. We accomplish this by providing objective editorial reviews through our product experts. Each product expert has a domain of expertise in which they gather product information and make recommendations for the products we carry within our store. They also are responsible for articles, reviews and rating of products.

We use a five criteria rating process in evaluating products to determine their sustainability. We rate each criteria on a 1 to 5 scale and then have a summary rating average of the 5 criteria.
1) Is the product a value? Does the cost justify the return in terms of efficiency and environmental impact?
2) Is the product efficient? Does the product have measurable and demonstrable efficiency?
3) Is the product packaged and shipped from it's manufacturing origins to the consumer doorstep in a sustainable manner? Is the packaging recycled materials and is the packaging recyclable? Is the shipping process as direct and low Co2 impact as possible?
4) Is the manufacturing process sustainable? Does the manufacturer work to have a minimal carbon and other environmental measures impact when producing the product? Does the manufacturer have a record of such practices?
5) What is the anticipated life-span or longevity of the product? Is it made of a quality or designed in a way to make it re-usable or to ensure a long life? Will this product end up in landfill?

Editorial Process

We maintain a rigorous editorial process with internal and external reviews to ensure accuracy, objectivity and comprehensiveness. We work closely with manufacturers and our advisory board to ensure that no stone is left unturned in writing about sustainability for our product reviews, editorials and articles.

We are focused on gaining a deep understanding of the products and solutions which can have the greatest impact on an individual level or on a global level and telling our visitors about them. We don't intend to carry every sustainable product, but only the ones which we believe in and can endorse. We always seek out the greenest sourcing and fulfillment options, to ensure that receiving any product you order has a minimal environmental impact.
