Many people think of alfalfa sprouts when they hear the word sprouts. In my experience alfalfa sprouts are the least appetizing of any sprout I've consumed and I would never add them to a salad, but might for a sandwich. Many people are unaware that there are other sprouts which are far more appetizing, in fact delicious and are extremely nutritious. They can also be grown at home. Remember to get your kids involved if you have them, so they can have the hands-on experience of watching them grow and then consuming them.
The first step is to find a source for quality, organic seeds which will serve as the origins of your sprouts. Then once you have the seeds, you'll need either a jar or a sprout growing device to incubate and grow your sprouts before you harvest. Personally I would avoid the popular alfalfa and mung sprout, and instead grow clover, broccoli, radish, sunflower, and cabbage sprouts instead. Once the reach the right maturity toss them into your salads and find out what you've been missing.
First, inspect your seeds to make sure they are not broken or damaged seeds, since they'll rot. Then depending on your seed size and surface area distribute your seeds evenly. Now soak the seeds in water for 12 hours, allowing for initial absorption. Then, for large seeds water every day and for small seeds on the first and forth day, after which every day. There should always be enough water to ensure some humidity in the container. If using a jar, cover with cheesecloth or a breathable material. Do not place in direct sunlight, but make sure that there is light in the room.
After the 12 hours drain and rinse the seeds. Remove any excess water, the should be moist but not wet. Now place the container in a dark place and 2-3 times a day repeat the rinsing and moisturizing step.
Within 5-7 days your sprouts should be ready to harvest.
