Learn the facts about BioBags
BioBags are the talk of the sustainability world at the moment, and for good reason. When a company invents a new polymer while innovating toward a greener earth, I applaud. That's the story of BioBags.
BioBags are Produced by Novamount, an Italian company whose mission is to produce "environmental alternatives to polyethylene-based plastics." I would say they've met their goal with BioBags, which are 100% biodegradable, 100% compostable bags made of a cornstarch-based ingredient, Mater-Bi.
In addition to their stellar decomposition stats, BioBags are also certified for low levels of metals, thanks to soy-based inks and dyes. BioBags are GMO free. They're shelf stable, and won't start breaking down until they're exposed to the elements, especially certain micro-organisms in the soil. BioBags will mix into the compost in 10-45 days, and leave no residue behind.
Consumer Uses of BioBags
-
Use Biobags to line the kitchen garbage bin and compost pail -- no need to clean out the muck, just toss the whole thing into the compost and it will biodegrade naturally.
-
When you're working in the yard and collecting leaf and lawn clippings you can manage them more easily in a biodegradable biobag. When the bag's looking scrappy, you can just dump the whole thing in the compost pile.
-
Scooping at the park--Did you know you can scoop Fido's waste in dog poop bags and cat litter bags that biodegrade too. That makes sense--put the dog's organic waste in an organic container, rather than waiting 100-1000 years for a plastic bag to decompose.
-
Gathering lawn and yard waste-if you live in an area with curbside gardening waste pickup, a BioBag could be for you. Remember to spread your grass clippings on the lawn or in the compost to give back nutrients, rather than stuffing them in a BioBag. If you do decide to gather your lawn clippings and leaves in a bag, BioBags begin to decompose in 3 to 4 days, instead of the normal 12 days. They are a perfect alternative to the large plastic bags, which won't biodegrade.
Tips for using BioBags:
Avoid excess heat. Store in a cool, dry place. The company's website warns, "Extended heat can make the BioBags feel soft and may eventually cause splitting". Customers warn that BioBags in compost pails will break down in wet, warm conditions. Be sure to empty the pail consistently to avoid a real mess.
